Can we talk about static electricity?

I pull a polyester sweater out of the dryer, clothes stuck to the sweater, pulling them apart I hear a lot of crackling. Two threads (about 4" long) stand straight up, move toward my hand when I put my hand near them. Why does static electricity do all those things?
