I dyed my hair, but the color didn't show up!?

Okay, So I dyed my hair from dark brown (pretty much black) to burgundy (which is pretty much purple). The only problem is the burgundy didn't quite show up. It's there but barely. I left the dye in for 40 minutes, then I took a shower. Should I have left it in longer?
